10/19/2022 08:00 AMColin Heffernan’s recent Facebook interview with Connecticut Against Gun Violence on Sept. 30 was enlightening and very welcome. Colin is a gun owner who recognizes that we can save lives while also protecting rights. He advocates for common sense gun control and responsible gun ownership because both positions can work together to make the state a safer pace.
Connecticut has sadly known gun tragedy with the Connecticut Lottery shooting and the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, and there isn’t a parent or grandparent in this state who doesn’t think about mass shootings on a regular basis. These horrific events have become all too common across the country and it’s painfully obvious that they will keep happening unless we take immediate and significant steps to curb gun violence and reduce access to weapons of war.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, firearms recently became the number one cause of death for children in the United States, surpassing motor vehicle deaths and those caused by other injuries. Let that sink in.
Fortunately, Colin articulated that he takes gun safety seriously and is dedicated to protecting our state’s gun laws from radical judges and special interest groups. Recently, two extremist gun groups have filed lawsuits in federal court to overturn our ban on assault weapons and Colin has pledged to defend this law and reassert our right to keep combat weapons off the street through new legislation if necessary.
Colin has been endorsed by Connecticut Against Gun Violence and has been named a “Candidate of Distinction” by Moms Demand Action. Colin’s opponent voted against strengthening our “Red Flag Laws” that keep guns away from people who pose a threat to themselves or others.
Join me in supporting Colin Heffernan as the best candidate to represent the 23rd District this November.
