Did We See the Same Show?

Did Karen Isaacs and I see the same show? (“Goodspeed’s Anne of Green Gables Is a Work in Progress,” Aug. 18)

I thought it was fantastic. There is no one song you come out singing, all the songs are delivered by incredible vocalists, clear, poignant, beautiful.

The set, by Wilson Chin, does have barn boards and there is no reference to beautiful Prince Edward Island or Anne’s farm chores, but it doesn’t matter. We quickly learn of Anne’s (Juliette Redden) struggle for acceptance, for love, for a home from her full force and beautiful voice. In addition, Diana discovers with Anne’s help she can do more than crochet. She is encouraged to reach further and she does.

As for the “unfocused choreography” by Jennifer Jancuska and “costumes that don’t seem to fit the location,” I disagree. The dancers seemed to show the chaotic and often harsh world we are living in today. The wood toned background, the muted colors of the dancers who constantly revolve around the main characters captured today’s somewhat ugly reality and allowed the main characters to continue their lives.

This Anne of Green Gables is a play for today! I’d say Jennifer Thompson has delivered an incredibly show!
