Elections Matter

The New York Times on July 10, reported on a Croydon, New Hampshire town meeting to approve the school budget. Attendance was so poor that the handful of voters who were there succeeded in slashing the school budget in half!

The story reminded me of Essex’s voter turnout for our school budget this year. Roughly 100 people out of more than 6,000 Essex residents showed up to vote. Fortunately, the budget passed, but given the low turnout, it could have been different.

The Croydon episode should be a wake up call to all of us. Elections matter. We all should aim for 100 percent voter participation.
