Time to Step Up

So, this rescinding of bylaws with the Police Commission. Neither Fire Selectman Carl Fortuna or Town Attorney Michael Cronin grew up here; they don’t speak for the people of this town. We, the town’s people, wanted this change, but since when do we not stand up for what we want? Since when did we allow people to speak for us? This is our town. We voted for people who we thought would make a difference, do things differently, and update bylaws. But all we have, again, is a circus.

And let me be very clear: even if you file a complaint with the Police Commission, it still goes to the Old Saybrook Police Department. In a sense you wind up with two police investigations — and that’s not a bad thing. Not everybody will talk to a police officer, mostly out of fear, for one reason or another.

But, Fortuna, you do not speak for all of Old Saybrook. A lot of us didn’t vote for you, and there was no other choice. I still can’t believe you thanked people for voting you in. I don’t believe Cronin has our best interest at heart either. You can throw digs because someone grew up in another state, but they may want better for this town — more than the two of you. As for the people of this town, we need to start going to the meetings and having our voices heard or we will lose the ability to complain when nothing is done.

Everybody’s voice matters. Regardless of political parties, we all want the best for this town and it’s future. It’s time to step up, more now than ever.
