The True Colors

Whatever side of the Critical Race Theory debate in Guilford they are on, I encourage every parent, taxpayer, and concerned citizen to watch the Guilford Board of Education (BOE) meeting from May 9 on the Guilford BOE YouTube channe’.

One need not watch the entire two-hour meeting to comprehend the true colors of our Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Freeman and our BOE members, but only 20 minutes from 1:05 to 1:25. What viewers will observe is a cowardly effort by them to deny any responsibility for the resignation of two Guilford School principals, and a stunning attempt to paint anyone who opposes their equity and social justice initiative as threatening to Guilford Public schools teachers and administrators. BOE member Dr. Richard Hersh incredibly commented the opposition as “a relatively small amount of people having a large negative effect...rather than inadvertently tarring the community, I would just as soon tar the people who are polluting the environment or infecting it.”

On Feb. 24, No Left Turn in Education Guilford drafted a position statement concerning the curricula equity audit titled “Report on School Culture and Pedagogy in GPS” presented by Dr. Donald Siler at the BOE meeting on Jan. 31, addressed it to every member of the BOE and copied every teacher and administrator in the GPS District. Specifically, the position statement cited numerous state and town statutes that require that administrators and teachers “provide access to all points of view [and not to] indoctrinate students with their personal views.” The cover letter sent with this position statement closed with the sentence, “We are concerned, we are informed, and we are watching.” I encourage everyone in Guilford to visit noleftturnguilford.org, click on news and read this position statement and cover letter.
