Essential and Commonsense

As a shoreline community, Guilford is vulnerable to some of the most damaging effects of climate change. Rising sea levels and an increasing frequency in powerful storms pose a serious threat to a community with a significant footprint within flood zones. In addition, we are on the heavily congested I-95 corridor, exposing our community to an increased level of pollutants. New Haven County received an F on our recent Air Quality Report Card from the American Lung Association.

Fortunately, Guilford is on the frontlines of the battle against climate change and the fight to protect our environment. Our state senator, Christine Cohen, is helping lead the environmental movement in Connecticut. During her time in Hartford, Cohen has been instrumental in enacting legislation to reduce pollution and contaminants. For this work, which includes banning single-use plastic bags and toxic PFAS, she has a near-perfect scorecard from the bipartisan Connecticut League of Conservation Voters.

Importantly, there are few voices in Hartford advocating as strongly as hers for adopting the essential and commonsense policy known as the Transportation Climate Initiative. The quality of life in our community and our state is dependent upon this work, so I thank Christine Cohen!
