Public Service and Engagement
I’m looking forward to the municipal election on Nov. 2 and to cast my ballot for First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons as well as the rest of the leadership from the Democratic slate, Al Goldberg and Scott Murphy. I encourage your readers to vote for Peggy and her team as well.
There’s much that happens in town government involving commissions and committees that doesn’t get a spotlight. I wanted to give one example from a town commission, the Water Control Pollution Authority, which Peggy and her team have prioritized. She has planned for wastewater and coastal infrastructure needs. I volunteered for the Water Pollution Control Commission, where the members of the committee have been charged through the Department of Environmental & Energy Protections to assist the town to develop a plan on handling the risks to our water supply. Our water supply can be affected by flooding, rising tides on the coast, and development within the town involving aging septic systems. This plan was only one of many unfinished projects that Peggy has tackled. Previous administrations didn’t fund a study of our water supply dating back to 1981, which has been a state requirement.
On other occasions, I’ve been impressed with the way in which she makes sure that even divergent views and opinions are heard as a way of coming to plan of action for our town. It’s no accident that a vast majority of the emergency decisions made by the Board of Selectman reached consensus. She has promoted bipartisan committees to tackle issues like charter review, housing, ethics, and American Rescue Plan Funds.
I’ve gotten to know of their public service and engagement that each of these selectmen have shown throughout my 31 years as a Madison resident. I encourage your readers to vote for these worthy candidates.
