Experience and Track Record

When Peggy Lyons was elected Madison’s first selectman two years ago, no one suspected that we would be facing a global pandemic only a few months later. Lucky for us, Peggy was up to the challenge. She kept the wheels of town government turning while keeping us safe and well informed.

As a member of the Beach & Recreation Commission, I was concerned about how the pandemic would affect Madison’s outdoor recreation areas, especially our beaches. Peggy quickly responded to the demands of an ever-changing environment, making hard choices and coming up with creative solutions. We now have improved in-house systems for renewing and receiving beach parking passes either online or in person, better beach staffing including lifeguards, more public transportation options for beach access, state funding to rebuild the seawall at Garvan Point, and restructured departments bringing greater efficiency in the use of town resources.

Even though some town projects had to take a back seat to a public health emergency, Peggy laid the groundwork to deal with some of our town’s stickiest issues: a renewal plan for Madison’s schools, the future of Academy and Island Avenue schools, charter review, a Coastal Resiliency Plan, an Ethics Commission—the list goes on. In each case, Peggy has promoted transparency, bipartisan collaboration, and careful planning to build a holistic vision for Madison. And in a pandemic world of social distancing, Peggy has used technology and new communication strategies to maintain a steady presence when it simply wasn’t safe to be interacting in person.

Given the experience and track record that Peggy Lyons brings to her office, we could not hire a better manager for the Town of Madison, let alone elect one. I hope your readers will join me in supporting Peggy Lyons for a second term.
