Some Actual Truth

There have been a lot of people talking about what they think is going on in our schools. As a senior currently attending Guilford High School, let me provide some actual truth in this education discussion.

In 11th grade, my U.S. history class was designed to go beyond what had already been taught in lower grades. The teacher explained that by 11th grade, students had already covered the typical units for U.S. history and this class would delve deeper into minority perspectives and experiences in our history. We discussed the Tuskegee Airmen; the Navajo Code Talkers; the roles Chinese, Japanese, and other immigrants had in the workforce; and the discrimination each of these groups faced. This class did not minimize previous lessons on the Holocaust, the atomic bomb, or any other major events in history; it expanded on my knowledge.

This is what age-appropriate, well-rounded education looks like. It is not indoctrination.
