Inaction Can Have Dire Consequences

I have noticed many green “Protect Guilford Schools” signs popping up around town in the past few weeks, each one making me feel less alone in my advocacy for equity in our public education system. Unfortunately, I have also noticed countless homes around town without any signs at all. Inaction may be tempting, but it can have dire consequences within our town.

Regardless of whether your readers have children in the Guilford school system, this is not a situation from which the members of our community can turn away. This Board of Education race will reflect our community’s choice to either stay silent in the face of extremism or to fight for what is right. In reference to the rightist extremism of his own time, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said, “And it may well be that we will have to repent in this generation not merely for the vitriolic words of the bad people and the violent actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence and indifference of the good people who sit around and say wait on time.”

It is time for this community to support the hard-working individuals doing what is right for our students. It is time for the residents of Guilford to stand up against racism and to embrace the practice of inclusivity. I encourage your readers to join me in voting for rows A and C (the Protect Guilford Schools slate) on Nov. 2. As King himself said, “the time is always right to do right.” Let’s do right, Guilford.
