A Duty to Every Citizen

We, Dorothy and Robert Gill, are very proud and happy to write this letter as an endorsement for our daughter, Roberta Gill-Brooks, to be elected again to the officer of tax collector on Nov. 2. Roberta has served in this capacity for the last four years.

We have lost count of the calls we have received at home, as well as personal contacts from citizens, sharing their interactions with her, and complimenting her for some personal service they felt was commendable, but to Roberta, the act was just a responsibility of the office and a duty to every citizen. To be sure, there are times when citizens cannot be given the answers they have hoped for, but Roberta has sought to give them an answer or conclusion that was received as fair and within the bounds of law.

Roberta’s 34 years as a customer service manager for AT&T prepared her for the kind of personal service required for this position. We consider it a stroke of luck for Joanne Cleary, the former long-time tax collector, to have recognized the skills Roberta has and recommended her to be her successor.

The last four years have most certainly brought about challenges unforseen (short staffing, retirement of veteran personnel, and the pandemic), but Roberta and the staff that she did have worked through it all with dedication and were successful in meeting the mandates of the personnel in charge of the fiscal responsibilities of the town in each of the past four years.

It is our hope and prayer that the taxpayers will vote to continue having Roberta to work with the other elected officers to do all of the things needed to serve our town in the best way, regardless of party.
