New Perspectives and Strategies

My name is Haifa Jalil, and I am running for the Board of Education in Westbrook. My husband and I moved with our three kids to Westbrook 23 years ago because we, like all parents, wanted to raise our kids in a safe and a healthy environment, with the best education possible. I am proud of our schools and am grateful for the education my children received, and I am ready to give back to Westbrook.

I have been an educator for 20 years. I began my career as a tutor in the special education department at Westbrook High School and have since worked as a science teacher at Wilbur Cross High School and Career High School in New Haven. During that time, I earned a master’s in science education and a doctorate degree in education. My research topic was about the influence of student-teacher relationships on students’ transition, engagement, and connection to school. My educational philosophy is that all children, regardless of their background and abilities, have the right to an excellent education.

Westbrook schools are strong and offer great programs, but I think our school system can benefit from new perspectives and strategies that I can offer. I understand the value of technology in the classroom, partnerships with local businesses, community service, opportunities for internships, and collaboration with the neighboring schools and colleges to provide our students with the 21st-century skills they will need for college and careers. The past 18 months have shown the importance of schools in supporting our students socially, emotionally, and academically. I will work with all stakeholders to make sure we meet these needs.

I hope I will get your readers’ support and their votes, and I look forward to serving them as a school board member.
