Culturally Responsive Teaching

When I think about how important it is for the youth of our town to get a well-rounded education, it’s gratifying to know that Guilford Public Schools (GPS), Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Freeman, and the Board of Education have embarked on a initiative to address how we discuss race and social justice in the classroom. This is not just a buzz word for “critical race theory” but a genuine effort to ensure culturally responsive teaching. We can not continue to think that by leaving out how race has shaped America that we’re giving our students all the facts about our country’s history.

With some additional professional training ,our teachers are also getting more tools to support GPS goal of providing every student an opportunity to thrive! Our students will get the benefit of educators who will have a better understanding of how to assess their curriculum and provide new methods for inclusive instruction.

Not only did GPS hire professional consultants but met with a diverse group of students to understand their experiences in the classroom. This is critical to understanding how students have felt while attending our schools. It is another example of trying to understand how best to provide a welcoming and affirmative environment for all students.

We cannot be naïve to think that just because we have had students who have been successful after their GPS education that there have not been many students who have felt left behind. Those who did not thrive may have benefited from a more in-depth understanding of American history and/or a more equitable educational experience.

I support the journey our superintendent and the Board of Education have begun to fully assess how to address equity and social justice for GPS students recognizing that this initiative will evolve over time.
