Brave Discussions

There are individuals who have waged a misinformation campaign against Guilford Public Schools regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. They insist that our children should not be taught about differences nor the complicated history of our country that influences disparities in society today. In fact, they are demonizing the concept of equity itself, under the influence of national lobbying groups that seek to sow division.

This backlash is not dissimilar to that which arose against the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The IDEA became law 46 years ago, despite opposition, and gave all children access to the educational resources they needed to reach their full potential. The IDEA was built on landmark decisions stemming from the Civil Rights Movement that laid the foundation of understanding that all children deserve an equitable education, not just equal access to the school building. I draw this comparison to recent discussions to warn of the dangers of demonizing the concept of equity, as this is another example of criticism coming from those who have not faced inherent disadvantages in the education system themselves.

Acknowledging hard history and providing opportunities for safe and brave discussions at school is one way to provide access to learning for all historically marginalized groups. Let’s continue to support our Guilford schools, which so many of us sought out specifically for their excellence in educating our children in ways that reach them.
