Just Getting Started

Old Saybrook has the longest coastline of any community in Connecticut, and it is one of Old Saybrook’s most important assets. The season is just getting started so I hope your readers are planning on enjoying the water in some way this summer.

Old Saybrook’s Harbor Management Commission manages several town-owned waterfront facilities. In the past several years, significant improvements have been made to our facilities and waterways. An aging fixed pier at the Ferry Road Town Dock was demolished and rebuilt, North Cove was dredged by the Army Corp of Engineers, and the Sheffield Street Town Dock enjoyed a complete renovation including new dinghy racks and floating docks.

A new kayak rack was also added to the Sheffield Street Town Dock, providing town residents an opportunity to store a kayak at the facility for the season.

And more is on the way. The commission has plans to add additional slips at the Ferry Road Town Dock, renovate the Clothesline Marina, and improve the North Cove Boat Ramp. All improvements are funded solely by fees collected by the commission and not by resident taxes.

The commission also implemented an online mooring system that, combined with our improved website, will provide residents, mooring and slips holders, and transient boaters access to information to enjoy Old Saybrook’s wonderful marine assets.

This work was accomplished by commissioners from both political parties working together in a collaborative manner. I am pleased to be part of the commission and to serve with my fellow commissioners.

Bob Murphy, Chair
