Refreshing to See

I am so proud to see that both State Senator Christine Cohen (D-12) and State Representative John-Michael Parker (D-98) have been actively seeking input from local officials on legislative initiatives. They have both met with Madison’s Planning & Zoning Commission and the Board of Selectmen. I can’t remember a time where our elected state officials solicited the viewpoints of our local boards and commissions in public meetings. There were always updates from the state, but usually after the fact. It is refreshing to see public servants listen and take into consideration the impact potential legislation may have on our town.

On the other hand, it is sad to see the scare tactics and fear-mongering that is going on in letters to the editors and on Facebook from people who should know better. I guess we know it is an election year when this type of thing starts to happen. I urge everyone to read the current versions of bills that are pending in our state legislature. If you like the bills, let your senator and representative know. If you don’t like the bills, let your senator and representative know. And if you want to have a real dialogue with thoughtful questions based in fact, I suggest doing so by email or phone—not Facebook!

We are all capable of understanding nuances in legislation and what impact it may have on our town. We all have voices that can be used to inform, persuade, and advocate for issues that we think are important. I urge everyone to use their voice. Our elected officials are listening.
