Thank Our Veterans

As Nov. 11, Veterans Day, approaches, I’m inviting Madison residents and the general public to be a part of a fundraising effort to renovate Madison American Legion Griswold Post 79 at 43 Bradley Road.

Griswold Post 79 has set a $100,000 fundraising goal for a long-overdue effort to renovate. Constructed in 1936, the building is in need of renovation both inside and outside. The goal is to replace the outside siding and roof for a coordinated look with the adjacent Senior Center and achieve a cohesive campus appearance. The post also aims to modernize the interior meeting hall to better serve the post and the community.

The American Legion supports many veteran outreach programs and provides financial and emotional support to veterans in need. It places flags on veterans’ graves on Memorial Day at the six cemeteries in town. It also provides an honor guard for an average of 30 veterans’ funerals a month. Perhaps some of the flags or funerals have been for one of your readers’ loved ones.

Equally important is what the legion does for the residents of Madison. It provides an affordable hall for family gatherings such as anniversaries and wedding receptions, supports Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops, sponsors Daniel Hand students for American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State, sponsors Little League and American Legion baseball teams, provides a college scholarship, and sponsors and coordinates all national memorial events in town, including the Memorial Day Parade and activities surrounding Veterans Day, including school visits by veterans.

Donations may be sent to the American Legion Building Renovation Fund, P.O. Box 504, Madison, CT 06443. The Building Renovation Fund is a wonderful way for Madison residents to thank our veterans for their service to our country this Veterans Day. No amount is too small.
