Better Than This

I wrote a letter to the editor titled “A Cooperative Society” that was published in The Sound on Sept 17. It concerned some suggestions for improving the Branford Community Dining Room (CDR). When I went to do deliveries for the CDR the next day, an unpleasant incident occurred in which I was denied basic human courtesy while trying to do my job as a delivery driver. I now know how the clients feel.

I alerted the CDR board to the problems last February and have been trying to work with them to change things at the private level. Clearly, I have failed. Any suggestions, even when positive, are met with being ostracized. I have resigned as a volunteer and will be volunteering at the Sunrise Café in New Haven in future.

I am embarrassed for my community and for the CDR management. We are better than this. I urge anyone who has had a similar experience to speak up. We need to change this culture.
