Grace and Dignity

I write to endorse Christine Cohen for re-election to the State Senate. Sen. Cohen (D-12) has been a voice for the voiceless and a champion for working families, representing our communities with common sense, fairness, and courage. First and foremost, she listens to her constituents so she can understand their needs.

She has been a leader in sponsoring environmental legislation that aims to protect our communities from the effects of climate change, and has worked across the aisle to get things done for her constituents. She helped pass a common-sense state budget that had no increase in the general sales tax rate, cut income taxes for seniors on Social Security and pensions, eliminated the business entity tax, and—importantly—required no increase in the income tax rate.

I am especially proud of Sen. Cohen’s response to issues brought to light by the killing of George Floyd—those of police accountability and systemic racism. Sen. Cohen took a courageous stand to support legislation for greater police accountability, and for that, she became the target of vitriolic attacks and threats to boycott her family business. Rather than sink to the level of her anonymous critics, Sen. Cohen chose to take the high road—responding thoughtfully and factually, with a level of grace and dignity that we should all be proud of.

That’s the kind of leadership we need in Hartford.
