Shoe Doesn’t Fit

The recent attack on State Representative Dave Yaccarino (R-87) by his opponent Kathy Grant [June 18 letter “Tone Deafness on Racism”] in their current campaign was upsetting to me. Insinuating that he is tone deaf and racist is abhorrent to anyone who has ever known him.

I have known Dave for 55 years, having grown up in the neighborhood adjacent to his, and being a classmate for eight years. I also observed him over the decades as a devoted parent and state representative who routinely meets with all of his constituents, young or old.

Even after serving multiple terms in the legislature, he remains the most humble elected official I have ever known. He is kind to a fault and has never been someone to attack another politician to score political points, or kick someone when they are down.

I realize that criticizing his voting record is fair game, but throwing the racist label on him is a shoe that simply doesn’t fit.
