The Damage Continues

One of the privileges of living in Guilford during quarantine has been the ready access to outdoor spaces and hiking trails. For both families and individuals, a quiet hike or mountain bike ride contributes to physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. We are pleased that so many of your readers have found solace on the properties that are owned and managed by the Town of Guilford and Guilford Land Conservation Trust.

These trails and outdoor spaces are maintained by volunteers for everyone’s benefit, but when some users cause damage to these properties, they detract from everyone else’s enjoyment of the outdoors. We especially want to draw readers’ attention to a dramatic increase in the destruction of our properties by the illegal use of quad bikes, dirt bikes, jeeps, and trucks, particularly in the Bluff Head area. To be clear, no motorized vehicles are permitted on any of our lands.

We need your readers’ help. We ask that neighbors and trail users who see or hear off-road vehicles on conservation land please call the Guilford Police non-emergency number 203-453-8061.

We encourage those with additional information that could be helpful to please call the Guilford Land Trust at 203-457-9253. We have had some success with the help of neighbors, but damage continues, day and night.

To enjoy these outdoor spaces, open sunrise to sunset, the rules are simple: no motorized vehicles, carry out what you carried in, keep your dogs leashed, take only photographs, and leave only footprints.
