One Thing Hasn’t Changed

On May 26, volunteer members of the Old Saybrook Garden Club planted 23 median planters along the half mile of central Old Saybrook. More than 30 members arrived at 8 a.m. to dig out and install new summer annual flowers through town. The club also maintains the head of Main Street Constitution Garden and the plantings around the firehouse, Police Station, and the Acton Library.

We couldn’t do this without community support. We’d like to thank the Old Saybrook Police Department, who protected the gardeners by cordoning off sections Main Street as the planting occurred and stationed officers to manage traffic. The Public Works Department and First Selectman Carl Fortuna have been unfailingly supportive. In addition, several community businesses offered plantings at a discount and/or support in other ways.

This project is usually fully funded through sales at our annual May Gardener’s Market, which, along with so many other community events, was canceled this year. Nevertheless, the club elected to proceed, just as it has for the last 47 years.

As the planting progressed, club members were cheered by many community members honking their car horns and shouted their thanks as they drove past us. We so appreciated the expressions of support.

We are happy to say that at least one thing has not changed: Old Saybrook will be beautiful this summer!
