Keep Working Together

Bare Necessities, Inc., is a non-profit organization that provides diapers and wipes to families in need along the shoreline between Guilford and Old Saybrook, servicing more than 400 babies. We have been very fortunate and grateful for everyone who has supported Bare Necessities and our mission. The number of families currently suffering from diaper need has increased tremendously during the coronavirus epidemic.

Our major fundraiser for the past four years has been our Ducky Dash for Diapers in Clinton. Due to the coronavirus, we will be unable to have the community event we have had in the past. In lieu of the Ducky Dash, we will have a “Ducky Dip” on Saturday, June 20. This will be a virtual event that will still have winning ducks and wonderful prizes! I encourage your readers to visit our website www.barenecessitiesct.org to adopt a $5 duck for the Ducky Dip or for more information about the event. A $5 donation provides three days of diapers and wipes for a baby.

The following are some facts about diaper need: One in three families in the U.S. have a diaper need; 6 to 12 diapers are needed per day for infants/toddlers costing an average of $100 per month. Diapers and wipes are not covered under the safety net programs such as SNAP (food stamps) or WIC (woman, infants, and children) and 38 percent of children under three years of age live below the poverty line. Children must also have a full day’s worth of disposable diapers to attend daycare.

For more information about ways to donate, readers can visit our website or our Facebook page, Bare Necessities, Inc. I thank everyone for their support as we continue to keep working together to keep our shoreline babies clean, dry, and healthy.
