Not Appropriate Treatment

Recently, State Senator Christine Cohen (D-12) posted on Twitter a mock ID card, indicating that the holder was a protester of the state’s restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that the holder declined any medical treatment for COVID-19 and, in fact, authorized a DNR protocol.

This is not appropriate treatment of constituents by an elected official. While some of the protesters may simply be people who oppose government restrictions in general, others may be more desperate. Some may be casino or kitchen remodeling employees who have lost jobs and struggle to feed their kids and pay their car loans. Some may own bars or salons or boutiques or fitness centers, all closed now, and struggle to pay bills both at home and for the business. Some may be students who need the academic environment to complete a degree. Some may struggle with mental health, part of the 891 percent increase (by some reports) in calls to a suicide hotline. Others may be in abusive relationships and hope that a return to work will provide needed separation time.

People’s life savings are at risk. Their homes are at risk. Their health insurance is at risk. Their children are at risk. Yes, the pandemic is a threat, but State Senator Christine Cohen should not mock those who are struggling under the burden of the governor’s restrictions. These times call for understanding and support. Try a little tenderness.
