Surprise and Delight

As I was working in my yard in North Haven on April 6, to my surprise and delight, a parade of cars came down my street honking their horns. Their cars were decorated with signs, streamers, garland, and an Easter Bunny. There were bullhorns and people popping through sun roofs. Then I realized: This parade was teachers, taking time to see their students and families that they miss.

I haven’t had a child in school since 1999. But I didn’t care. I waved and cheered with everyone else. It brought tears to my eyes. How thoughtful of these men and women who love and teach our kids to go to such extremes.

I’d like to personally thank all of those who took part. They brought such joy at such a rough time.

When we are outside, we should wave to our neighbors. It doesn’t cost anything to be kind to each other, especially now when we all feel isolated. I hope all my family, friends, neighbors, and customers stay safe, healthy, and remember to practice social distance. Most of all, let’s keep our hellos and smiles plentiful during this very trying time. It will brighten someone’s day.
