The Sensible Option

I believe Madison should hold its referenda on the school construction and maintenance plan ($129 million) and the Academy School community center ($14 million, plus at least $567,000 in annual operating costs in perpetuity) in November rather than October.

First, November would achieve the highest possible turnout—perhaps 80- to 90 percent, judging by the November 2016 turnout of 84 percent. Second, we voted on a referendum question on the general election ballot in November 2008; if it was good in 2008, it ought to be good in 2020. Third, a separate vote could cost up to $10,000, and a town that is more than $30 million in debt should not be wasting money by holding two different votes mere weeks apart.

Let’s embrace November, the sensible option.
