A Little Better Every Day

He was mowing the Post Office lawn when I saw him last. I thought he was too old to be doing that and remembered earlier days when he was the clerk I wanted to handle my mail.

Friendly, efficient, and always with a good word or two, he would share his pride in his partner’s marathon runs, or memories of his younger days on a motorcycle or growing up at Saybrook Point.

Bill Manning worked for the U.S. Postal Service for more than 60 years. He never retired. He never lived a life of leisure or luxury. But Bill was the kind of guy that made the world a little better every day for others.

Bill Manning died last week. The paper said he was 88 years old. He happened to mention several years ago that he had Post Office Box #2. I think the Post Office should close that box and place a plaque there in his memory—just a little token of his lifetime of dedication and service.
