11/06/2019 07:00 AMFor some time now I have wished the Guilford schools had a different mascot and I wondered how the one we have was chosen in the first place. When the tract of land along the shores of Long Island Sound that became Guilford was purchased by the first English settlers from the Menunkatuck, a small clan of native Americans who were part of the Quinnipiac Tribe, it was stipulated in the deed that “the Menunkatuck remove themselves from the land” (A Treasury of Guilford Plains by Joel Helander, 2008, pp 9-10).
The English Puritans wanted the land without Indians. Why would Guilford subsequently choose an Indian mascot? Do we not know our history? What could we possibly be signifying by that choice?
It is definitely time for a change and I trust that this process, begun once again, will see fulfillment in a new name for our school teams, one of which we can be proud, no apologies necessary.
