10/30/2019 08:00 AMOn Nov. 5, voters will cast their ballots for candidates seeking offices in municipal government, including important boards and commissions. A crucial government organization in a municipality is the Board of Fire Commissioners. A fire commission plays a pivotal role in civilian oversight of a municipality’s fire department, namely, beginning with the hiring approval of department personnel from the rank of chief, to officers, to firefighter/paramedics, both paid and volunteer. The commission also works with fire department administrative personnel to establish department policies and standards, equipment needs, and planning and development, as well as representing the public’s interests and expectations pertaining to the emergency services the fire department renders to residents, businesses, and visitors to a municipality. Much is expected of those who are elected to serve as fire commissioners, and rightfully so.
Ms. Jennie Caldwell has impressed me with her willingness to listen to concerns, suggestions, and ideas from constituents, and she strikes me as a keen learner. A town resident of more than 12 years, in addition to her academic credentials, which includes a master’s degree in education, Ms. Caldwell’s six years serving on the Board of Education where she chaired the Policy Revision Committee, her 25 years working as an occupational therapist and assistive technology professional, her roles as Democratic Town Committee co-vice chair and treasurer, as well as her commitment to transparency in government and to making decisions based on supporting data and common sense provide Ms. Caldwell with the necessary skill set and experience for her to serve honorably and effectively as a fire commissioner for the Town of North Haven.
With the above considerations in mind, I am writing to encourage North Haven voters to cast their ballots for Jennie Caldwell for fire commissioner on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
