I’m writing to express support for Katie Stein, who is a candidate for the Madison Board of Education (BOE) in the Nov. 5 election.

Katie and her husband Jonathan have lived in town since 1999 and have four sons in the Madison public schools. In addition to having a vested interest in our schools, she brings to the BOE a personal and professional focus on the health and wellbeing of all children, along with strong qualifications. She has worked at Yale New Haven Health as a certified child life specialist for 25 years, and was recently appointed regional coordinator for Children’s Disaster Relief Services (CDRS) in our area, after volunteering for CDRS in Florida last year in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael.

I’ve gotten to know Katie on a personal level over the past few years through the Democratic party. Beneath her bubbly caring personality is a dedicated public servant, committed to working collaboratively and transparently toward a BOE agenda that provides a student-focused culture in order to motivate, challenge, and support every student.

Serving as chair during her first term on the BOE, Katie has realized several impressive accomplishments in her tenure: bringing the Effective School Solutions therapeutic programming to at-risk middle school students, creating an age-appropriate learning environment at a new playground for 4th- and 5th graders following the reconfiguration of schools, initiating a Communications Committee to create more active communication and transparency with the community during the reconfiguration and beyond, and establishing the Tri-Board Facilities Working Group with representatives from all three major town boards to collaborate and solve the complex problems of our school facilities.

Katie deserves to be re-elected to the BOE where she will continue to work hard for Madison.
