10/30/2019 08:00 AMIf you had told me 15 years ago that I would be running for election for first selectman, I would have laughed. I didn’t plan or expect to go into politics.
My parents and grandparents gave me a strong sense of obligation to serve the public. (When my mother first introduced my father to her parents, their question to him was, “What do you plan to do to make the world a better place?” My father gulped hard.) I’ve always used my professional skills in writing, publishing, and public affairs to provide assistance to those in need and to fight for issues I believe in. But I didn’t think of elective office as the way I would contribute to society.
When I saw the need in our town, however, I felt I had to step up. I saw too much negativity about what Killingworth could be and do—too much fear that taking on any project, whether building playing fields or preparing for emergencies, would lead town spending to go out of control. I wanted to keep our sights high even while we kept our taxes low.
Today, Killingworth is on an upward trajectory, thanks to sound management, the hard work of staff, and the contributions of volunteers. We have laid a sturdy fiscal foundation, and we plan for the future with confidence.
As a politician, I see myself as a public servant. I remain committed to politics as a way for people to work together for the common good. The Democratic candidates I’m running with share that commitment.
For a town government dedicated to serving all the people of Killingworth, I encourage your readers to vote Row A on Nov. 5.
