Ability to Listen

I’m happy to endorse Richard Hersh as a candidate for the Guilford Board of Education (BOE). Dick has been my condo neighbor for three years, and in that time has been active in the homeowners association and personally helpful to everyone here.

His long commitment to better education is evident in his impressive résumé, with his early career as a high school teacher and his years as a professor of education, administrator, and president at a number of private and public institutions of higher learning. With this impeccable background he has, I believe, the ability to appreciate the many facets of all levels of education.

But Dick’s sterling credentials are not the prime reason that I believe he will be a valuable member of the school board. Just as important is his ability to listen and his enthusiasm in the dialogue. He has spoken about his interim term experience on the Guilford BOE in a way that I find compelling, sharing his admiration and respect for the other board members and for the administrators. His keenness for exploring all possibilities, both for the benefits of the students and for the ultimate ways that a system like Guilford’s can excel in this evolving world, will be a distinct asset to the BOE.

Thorough background knowledge, fresh views, and enthusiasm are vital to those involved in any organization, and I know that Dick Hersh will continue to be an invaluable member of Guilford’s Board of Education.
