Knowledge, Values, and Commitment

A great school system such as Guilford’s needs leadership, vision, values, and thoughtful oversight, which is why I’m glad that Richard Hersh is a candidate for the school board this November.

Our grown children received a great public education in Guilford, and my wife and I still care about how much the school system means for today’s students and families, and how it reflects on our town and everyone who lives or works here. A continued excellent school board is essential to keeping that legacy going.

Richard Hersh comes to the role with exceptional professional credentials and vast experience as a teacher, researcher, author, administrator, and as an educational leader. He started in the classroom as a high school teacher and became a professor of education and senior administrator, including terms as president of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and Trinity College in Hartford. His many publications include the books The Structure of School Improvement and Promoting Moral Growth.

Perhaps what defines Dr. Hersh best is his ability to help solve the practical problems that modern school systems face. Whether it’s the nuts and bolts of a large budget, questions of policy, or evaluating personnel, he knows how to work together with people to serve the school board’s mission. In his career he has emphasized the need for students to be prepared not just to get the best test scores but to gain the life-long skills of critical thinking, problem-solving, clear communication, accepting responsibility and accountability, and taking the perspective of others.

Dr. Hersh has the knowledge, values, and commitment to help make a great school system even better for our children and that’s why I strongly endorse him as a candidate for the school board.
