An Exciting Time

My name is Martin Jaffe and I am asking for your readers’ votes as a Democratic candidate for the Clinton Planning & Zoning Commission. I was appointed to the commission by the Board of Selectmen in August to fill a vacancy on the Planning & Zoning Commission and am now seeking election for a full term on that body.

I believe that I am well qualified to serve on the Planning & Zoning Commission. I moved to Clinton from Illinois, where I taught urban planning at the University of Illinois at Chicago for 30 years until retiring in 2015. I was also head of the department for several years at a time when our graduate planning program was the largest one in North America. Prior to my academic career, I was a research administrator for the American Planning Association, the national planning organization in the U.S., and, before that, was the regulatory planner for the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.

This is an exciting time to be a Clinton resident, since the town is facing several new and challenging opportunities, such as the redevelopment of the old Morgan School site and the Unilever property. I would like to help Clinton address many of the complex issues associated with these and other projects by continuing to serve on the Planning & Zoning Commission. Because much of my research and teaching involved water resources and natural hazards planning, I will make sure that the quality of life is protected and enhanced for all Clinton residents.

We need to keep the momentum going in revitalizing our community, creating new jobs and expanding our tax base. I encourage your readers to support me and the other Row A Democratic candidates in November.
