More Effort Is Needed

I noted with great interest the wonderful photo of the Hammonassett lifeguards and the accompanying article [“Saving Lives—Just Another Day at the Beach for Hammo Lifeguards,” Aug. 29]. Madison has not provided lifeguards at the Surf Club for several years. Although the Madison beach is not a dangerous as Hammonassett, nevertheless danger exists. I feel it is just a matter of time before a serious loss will occur.

Madison officials state the lack of appropriate applicants as the reason for not having lifeguards. After reading the article it seems that to acquire them requires effort. I would suggest the they contact [Department of Energy & Environmental Protection Water Safety Coordinator Sarah] Battastini for advice. She seems to have an overflow of applicants.

Perhaps contacting Madison high school seniors in the fall and offering to pay for the certification course if they commit to working as Madison guards. They could be contracted to repaying the fee if they do not work as guards for Madison. It may also be that the salary offered by Madison is not comparable to the Hammonassett salary.

In any case, it seems that the reason Madison does not have lifeguards is because more effort is needed.
