The Last Thing Wanted or Needed

Over the objections of every resident who spoke at the last Town Council meeting, the Republican majority pushed through the sale of D.C. Moore School located at 70 (aka 82) Elliot Street to a developer.

The school was built on wetlands and has had major flooding in the past, which caused black mold issues, and was ultimately closed in 2016. Building homes here will only cause the same issues in the future and potentially cause a plethora of illnesses to the residents. Nothing should be built on this property, period.

There are many reasons we are opposing this development, most important among them are the serious impact this will have on the environment and the quality of life of the residents. Major flooding will occur once the drainage of the excess runoff is diverted into the wetlands and will have a detrimental impact on this neighborhood.

We are angry! The Republicans’ minds were made up before they even got to that Town Council meeting and before they heard one comment from the 60 people who attended. We were disrespected, we were lied to, and there were many unanswered questions that could have tabled the sale. The Republican council members kept repeating that they were there to sell a piece of property and didn’t want this to be another 200 Tyler Street. They are supposed to represent what the residents want and to do the right thing; they did neither.

This property needs to be used for open space. The last thing that is wanted or needed here is a 14-home development that will cause environmental, health, and quality of life issues for the entire neighborhood.
