A Very Difficult Decision

It was a very difficult decision to cancel the 37th annual Concert on the Green that was scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 6. As the producers of this annual event, we at the Madison Cultural Arts Concert on the Green Committee want to explain to the thousands of music lovers and Madison residents why the show had to be canceled.

We were closely monitoring numerous weather reports on the concert date and it appeared there was a window of dry weather that would have allowed us to squeeze in the concert on the Madison Green rather than move it indoors to Daniel Hand High School. While MOTO and the Wallingford Symphony Orchestra were very cooperative in rearranging their scheduled performances to fit into this window, Mother Nature was not. Although the rain that fell in the late afternoon was not a downpour and of moderate duration, it did leave pools of standing water on the stage, presenting a safety issue for the sound and lighting personnel as well as the orchestra members. This was why the show was canceled, even though the weather cleared before the time the concert would have started. As it turned out, there was also light rain in the 7 p.m. hour, which would have required us to end the concert had it been in progress at that time. We share your disappointment that the concert could not go on.

We hope this year’s rainout has not dampened your readers’ enthusiasm for this much-loved Madison event. We missed everyone this year and look forward to seeing them at next year’s concert and beyond.
