Almost Missed the Chance

I wanted to bring Clinton readers’ attention to some of the wonderful things happening in our public schools! Jason Corrado is a 5th-grade teacher at Abraham Pierson School. He is passionate about history, and for the past several years has offered students an afterschool history club. At the end of the club they are eligible to take a test to qualify for a regional history bee.

This year Pierson sent eight students to the Regional History Bee in Bethel on March 23. Three of those students qualified to move on to compete at the National History Bee in Chicago from June 6 to 9! They are busy studying and preparing for the competition.

The past few years, the afterschool enrichment clubs have been cut to almost nothing due to budget constraints. Mr. Corrado had to fight to keep the History Club going this past year. I hate to think we almost missed the chance for these students and our town to shine in the national spotlight. I encourage your readers to keep opportunities like this in mind when they go to the polls on May 8 to vote on our education budget—let’s vote “Yes” for our kid’s education!
