04/17/2019 08:00 AMThe performing arts serve an important role in our children’s future. Their involvement in band, chorus and musical theater serves to promote self-confidence and leadership skills. These are key components that, combined with academic skills, our children will need as tomorrow’s leaders. In addition, numerous research studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between students’ participation in music programs and their academic success.
Following his 5th grade theatrical experience, my younger son was inspired to pursue his new interest at Kidz Konnection, where he also enrolled in tap, jazz, and vocal lessons. His self-confidence and leadership skills have strengthened through the arts, as have those of many of his peers.
I have also been thoroughly impressed by both Eliot’s music program and Morgan’s music and theater programs. Beyond their school-based programs, Eliot and Morgan students have the opportunity to participate in the Southern Region Music Festival and Morgan students may also participate in the Shoreline Music Festival. Both of my sons have greatly benefited from their band experiences and many of their classmates in both band and chorus have similarly benefited.
The skills our children demonstrate are a positive reflection of our community. Had those opportunities not been available to them, many of our children’s aspirations may never have been realized.
The dedication and expertise of Clinton’s music teachers have cultivated an appreciation of the performing arts in both our children and in our community, as well. Morgan music teacher Raymond Smith was honored as this year’s Teacher of the Year. This recognition serves as testimony that both the students and the larger community clearly value the role of the performing arts as part of a solid educational program. I encourage your readers to show their support for Clinton’s students by voting “Yes” for the budget on May 8.
