04/17/2019 08:00 AMI want to applaud the owners of Caron’s Corner for deciding on their own to stop using single-use plastic bags at the checkout counters.
When stores in Branford use plastic bags for checkout, many get loose as litter because they are so light that if not well contained in a trash can, or if set down for a moment and a strong wind comes along, they are blown away to become a blight on Branford’s landscape. Or these bags can make their way into our storm drains or streams or along Branford’s 20 miles of coastline, and then end up in even larger bodies of water. Studies have estimated that 20 percent of them wind up in the ocean, and wildlife here in Branford, out in Long Island Sound, or in the Atlantic Ocean doesn’t survive if it gets caught in them or ingests them.
Let’s see BYO (Bring Your Own reusable bag) Branford get an ordinance passed to eliminate these thin, light bags from being used in Branford. Then all of us will bring our own reusable bags, or boxes, or even carry retail purchases out of stores, so that the amount of thin plastic trash stops being found everywhere!
