An Investment Worth Making

As parents of Melissa Jones Elementary School students, we wanted to thank all of the Guilford residents who voted in 2018 approving the replacement of our school’s failed heating system. Thanks to their votes, our kids and teachers were warmer this winter (and gloves weren’t needed during writing lessons). We heard that the children at Cox Elementary are having problems with their failing system and, while we appreciate getting our system fixed first, we stand united to help them get the votes to keep their kids warm.

The 2019 bonding question will not only modernize the Cox heating system, but it will also continue to update the Melissa Jones School. Our school still has the same windows from when the building was expanded in 1971. All of that lovely new warmth is, quite literally, going out the windows. After 47 years, it is time to replace the windows and create a lot of energy savings.

As parent volunteers for our children’s schools, we work tirelessly to raise monies all year long to provide our kids with field trips, playgrounds, and cultural activities that were once upon a time provided for in the town budgets, but there is only so much volunteers can accomplish alone.

Did you know that there are only three towns in all of Connecticut that outperform our amazing Guilford Public Schools on the state’s 14 accountability indicators of school quality, but we are ranked 47th (out of 169) in spending?

We encourage your readers to help us keep our schools one of the best in the state—it is an investment worth making. We respectfully encourage that people of Guilford vote “Yes” on this year’s bonding question on April 9.
