03/20/2019 08:00 AMThis spring, the Guilford Preservation Alliance (GPA) celebrates the fifth anniversary of its visitor kiosk located next to the Community Center.
Volunteer greeters staff the kiosk Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. from May to October, helping visitors and residents navigate its website, www.visitguilfordct.com, and suggesting ways to organize a great day, weekend, or vacation here in Guilford.
Website activity continues to grow, up last year by 35 percent over 2017. That’s rewarding because our web content is intended to get people out-of-doors to walk around and experience the natural and man-made history of our town. Self-guided walking tours highlight our wide-ranging architectural styles (680 architecturally significant structures and the oldest stone house in Connecticut), museums, and cemeteries (Cinderella is buried here!). There are interesting stories behind almost every building around our green, reflecting our ancestors’ roles in the Revolutionary War, slavery and the Civil War, and good old American ingenuity (Checkerberry soda anyone?).
More than 20 trails in and around Guilford provide something for everyone, from the casual walker to the most experienced hiker, and our site has information on them all. And, with a recent grant from the Guilford Garden Club, we began work on a large map mounted on the kiosk that clearly displays park, museum, recreation, school, and Town Green locations.
Now, spring is in the offing and it will soon be time for all the non-skiers among us to venture out for our share of that fresh, clean air. There’s no better place to do that than in Guilford, so I encourage your readers to check out www.visitguilfordct.com and find that special something they want to do.
