Most times when you go to a celebration, you bring a present or a gift. It would be the rare occasion that one would receive something at such an event. On Feb. 28, I was honored to represent Families Helping Families (FHF) at a very special celebration. It was The Joel School 100th Day of School celebration. This is a very different type of gathering. Rather than doing something for themselves, all members of the Joel School community collect needed items for area nonprofits and presents these gifts at an all school assembly. This year eight area nonprofits were chosen to receive very needed items.

The students in Mr. Reynolds’s, Mrs. Stiver’s, Mrs. White’s, Mrs. Browning’s, and Mrs. Simonsen’s classes contributed items to FHF. These items will be distributed to families in the Clinton community.

Having this event is not just a one-time event at The Joel School. The Joel School has been holding these celebrations for a number of years and they have become part of the tradition at Joel School. Teaching lessons of kindness, caring, and sharing has also become part of fabric at Joel. Not only do they hold this event, they also every year host a week-long food drive the week before Thanksgiving.

Teaching the basic core subjects so that our young children receive a solid foundation is of the utmost importance at The Joel School. The staff also realizes that life lessons such as kindness, caring, and sharing also need to be emphasized at a young age. What I saw on that Thursday was the fact that these young people are learning those lessons well! We thank the entire staff at Joel for helping these children become the next generation of carers and sharers.
