To Serve Us All

If settling the sexual harassment lawsuit against Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr., is in the best interest of the taxpayers of the Town of East Haven who are tasked to shoulder the burden of paying for that financial settlement (for now), then something must be fundamentally flawed in the reasoning of those who think otherwise. I am one of them.

Common sense, I think, typically follows the rule of logic and in this particular controversy, the mayor’s position was that the sexual harassment alleged against him was an illusion that only existed in the victim’s mind. Later on, however, three more women came out to make similar charges. Could their declarations be hallucinations as well?

Perhaps believing his tenure in office equals an unencumbered consent to engage in any conduct that for others would be deemed deplorable and perhaps further emboldened by the thought that he will not be held accountable given his popularity, he dismisses it all as “fake news.”

Now comes Town Council Chairman Ken McKay denigrating the character of the victim(s) in a toadying show of tribal politics. Does this all combine as one solid, unified picture of what represents our community’s ideal?

The government does not exist to serve itself or its servants. (Yes, I still believe it is public service). It was created and preserved by the taxes we pay, to serve us all, not just a few. But this administration profoundly declares that its personal and party’s interest subordinate all the others.

Let’s remember them next year when they seek our trust and votes.
