Good News Is Long Overdue

The classic holiday film It’s a Wonderful Life suggests that whenever a bell rings, an angel has earned his or her wings. In Guilford, whenever a doorbell rings, it is more likely that an angel from Meals on Wheels is delivering a delicious, healthful meal to one of Guilford’s elderly, infirm, and/or disabled residents. Meals On Wheels angels are worthy of wings, however, it is more likely that they have earned their wheels!

Meals On Wheels, a part of Guilford Interfaith Services, is an army of angels that prepares and delivers meals with a smile to those of us who need assistance with food preparation. They give of their time generously, providing hot lunches on week days and frozen meals for weekend reheating. They have even made special deliveries on some holidays, taking time away from their own families to make a holiday nicer for someone else. Meals on Wheels is a perfect example of neighbor helping neighbor in Guilford, just as neighbors in Bedford Falls came to George Bailey’s rescue in It’s a Wonderful Life.

As the holiday season approaches, we tend to count our blessings and give thanks to those who have done us a great service. In a society where headlines are all too often negative, good news is long overdue. I would like to extend holiday wishes and my sincere gratitude to Guilford’s own angels, the ones who have traded their wings for wheels.
