Ready to Get to Work

In 1936, at the height of the Great Depression, Governor Wilbur Cross bolstered his people’s spirits with a Thanksgiving proclamation in which he reminded residents that Connecticut was replete with “blessings that have been our common lot and have placed our beloved state with the favored regions of earth.”

Eighty-two years later, our state is again hurting from economic woes. And yet, we still have blessings in abundance. Chief among them is the freedom to vote in privacy and in safety, which record numbers of Nutmeggers did on Nov. 6.

The fact that I was elected on that day by the people of the 36th District to serve as their next state representative is a privilege few ever dream of, and one I take very seriously.

I want to thank my opponent, Representative Bob Siegrist, for his service to the people of Chester, Deep River, Essex, and Haddam. And I must acknowledge the unwavering dedication of my volunteers—far too numerous to mention here by name—and the support of the local Democratic Town Committee members, the Democrats who supported their party, and those who voted for me on the Working Families party line. But just as important in this election were the unaffiliated voters who listened to me with an open mind and voted their conscience, and the many Republican voters who have watched in dismay as their reasonable, moderate party has slipped away.

It’s time now to work together to protect what’s good about our life in the 36th and change what needs to be improved. I’ve listened to and heard every one of the voters’ concerns, and I’m ready to get to work for them and to enhance, in Cross’s words, the “liberty and justice freely granted by each to his fellow and so as freely enjoyed.”
