Truly Dedicated to the Game

I was saddened to hear about Joe Maher’s recent resignation as the boys varsity soccer coach. Here is a man who truly cares about Guilford and Guilford Soccer. One doesn’t get rich coaching high school soccer, so it takes a person who is truly dedicated to the game to continue to coach for all the years he did. We all know of his many accomplishments and how Guilford dominated boys soccer, even gaining national recognition. My son who played under Coach Maher went on to play four years of college soccer, and still is playing today due the love of the game and the understanding of the hard work it takes to play at a high level. This was something he learned from Coach Maher. Coach Maher gained the respect of all his high school players and all the players coached by him, including my daughter and her teammates who had the privilege to play under him when he coached for the Guilford Soccer Club.

Good luck goes to Curtiss Gullette and Jeff Sullivan, both whom also played for Coach Maher and went on to play in college and after college, who now coach the high school team. I’m sure I am speaking for all his past players, when I thank Coach Maher for being a great coach and making Guilford a true soccer town. Hopefully it can become one again.
