Prepared, Thoughtful, Reasonable

People serving on local boards hope to make a difference in their communities. Usually they do. But they also learn—about management, budgets, and the difficult choices that must be made every day, beyond sound bites. In my 19 years on the Guilford Board of Education (BOE), the last 12 as chairman, I’ve served with dozens of dedicated citizens who chose to work to make our schools among the very best in Connecticut.

Christine Cohen is easily one of the most thoughtful, reasonable, and prepared board members I have worked with. She brings a combination of business savvy and deep commitment to making our schools the best that they can be. She is the co-chair of the board’s Operations Committee. She has been at the center of recent reforms improving instruction and learning. Christine knows very well—from experience—the pressures that our shoreline towns face from Hartford.

I endorse Christine’s candidacy for the State Senate, heartily and without reservation, and encourage all Guilford residents to vote for her. Simply put, she will be an outstanding state senator. Her performance as a board member is compelling evidence of how she will perform as a senator—prepared, thoughtful, reasonable, and hard-working.

We will miss Christine on the board, but, to be honest, she can do more for us as one of only 36 state senators—hopefully as a member of the Education Committee. I know that when someone proposes a bill that can affect our schools, she’ll know what questions to ask, what objections to raise, what changes to make, and how to vote. That matters.

The last BOE member we sent to Hartford was Patricia Widlitz. To understate the point, that worked out pretty well. Let’s do it again.
