Must Take Issue

Last week a resident of Deep River wrote a heartfelt letter of gratitude for the wonderful people who work at Adams Supermarket in Deep River [Nat Eddy, “Feel Good About Local”]. While I am in agreement with all the author’s kind words about the store, I must take issue with taking the dog into the store. The author of the letter acknowledged “not everyone likes dogs in stores.”

I would remind the public that dogs are not permitted in grocery stores per Connecticut state public health codes. In this instance, the author of the letter did not indicate that this is a service animal but rather the family pet in need of a walk.

I have been in Adams and have seen a dog lacking any identification of being a service animal loaded into the large compartment of a shopping cart. I have been a dog owner and understand people’s love for their animals, however that doesn’t mean that they can be taken everywhere. And I certainly don’t appreciate having to put my groceries into the shopping cart where a dog’s butt has recently been.

Maybe places where animals are permitted can more prominently display welcome signs and those places where animals other than service animals are not permitted can let the public know that, too.
