An Emotionally Charged Topic

Thank you for featuring the Academy School redevelopment project on the front page [“Academy Committee Preps for Polling,” Oct. 4]. A big thanks also to the Horton Group for dedicating time and resources to develop a very viable proposal on an especially sensitive local issue.

I, too, was conflicted as to what future use could satisfy the many different perspectives of my fellow Madisonites—a very emotionally charged topic.

Having raised a family in town since 1972, I fondly remember coaching, umpiring, etc. many a baseball game on those athletic fields. While the Horton proposal contains some commercial space, as it must to be viable, it does so in a sensitive, issue directed, way. Bravo!

However this is resolved, I want to also thank our first selectman, Tom Banisch, for his patience and guidance during this process. It is not easy to stand in the middle of the battlefield and direct traffic.
